2D Era 1999 Anywhere City

Grand Theft Auto 2

Anywhere City, three districts, seven gangs who all want you dead eventually. Grand Theft Auto 2 is DMA Design's 1999 follow-up, still viewed from directly overhead and set in a nameless Anywhere City somewhere ahead of the present. Its idea was gang respect: seven gangs across three districts, each tracking how they feel about you, and jobs for one of them usually costing you standing with another. Claude Speed works his way up all of them at once and cannot keep everybody happy. It shipped on Windows and PlayStation in 1999, then Dreamcast and Game Boy Color in 2000.

What it introduced

4 firsts for the series

  • 01 Gang respect tracked separately for seven gangs, where pleasing one costs you another
  • 02 Save games bought with cash at a church rather than granted between missions
  • 03 Three self-contained districts unlocked by score instead of one continuous city
  • 04 Wanted levels that summon SWAT, FBI and eventually the army

Codes go in the player name field

GTA 2 has no console and no cheat menu. You type the code in as your character's name when you start a game, and on PC you enter GOURANGA first, delete it, then type the code you want.

Nobody agrees which port each code belongs to

Three separate published lists were checked while building this page and all three assign codes to different platforms. The codes themselves match everywhere, so they are listed without a platform column rather than with a wrong one. If a code does nothing on your version, it most likely belongs to another port.
