After five years in Liberty City, Carl "CJ" Johnson returns to Los Santos in 1992 for the funeral of his mother Beverly, murdered in a drive-by. At LSPD intake, corrupt C.R.A.S.H. detectives Frank Tenpenny, Eddie Pulaski, and Jimmy Hernandez frame CJ for the murder of Officer Ralph Pendelbury, blackmailing him into doing their wet-work. CJ rejoins Grove Street Families with his older brother Sweet, sister Kendl, and childhood friends Big Smoke, Ryder, and Big Bear — but the set is fractured. CJ rebuilds GSF through tags, drive-bys, and a turf-war push that re-takes Glen Park. He meets Cesar Vialpando, leader of the Aztecas, who shows CJ a green Sabre at the scene of Beverly's drive-by — proof the assassination was an inside job. In 'The Green Sabre,' Sweet is ambushed by Ballas while Smoke and Ryder no-show. Sweet is arrested; CJ is dumped 200 miles north in Angel Pine.

Released June 9, 2005 by modder Patrick Wildenborg; unlocked a fully-modeled but disabled sexual minigame. ESRB re-rated the game AO on July 20, 2005; Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop pulled it. Hillary Clinton called for an FTC investigation; House Resolution 91 passed 355–21. Take-Two paid a $20M settlement (2009). Rockstar patched the content out (v2.0+) and Definitive Edition contains no Hot Coffee files.
Players were so enchanted with the Area 69 jetpack that Rockstar made it a 100% reward in GTA V Online.
